Stars sign Skrastins to two-year deal
Jul 02, 2009 - 6:00 PM PDT     Credit:

DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars have signed free agent defenceman Karlis Skrastins to a two-year deal worth US$2.75 million.

The Stars gave the 34-year-old Skrastins $1.1 million for the 2009 season and $1.65 million for 2010.

Skrastins played in 80 games for the Florida Panthers last season and had four goals, 14 assists, 18 points and led the team with 171 blocked shots.

Skrastins has played in 679 career games and has 27 goals and 88 assists total. He also played in the 2004 and 2006 Stanley Cup playoffs and has skated for Latvia at the Winter Olympics in 2002 and... read more at TSN.ca

Spezza, Osgood among those missing from Olympic camp list
Jul 02, 2009 - 6:00 PM PDT     Credit:

Jason Spezza, Chris Osgood and Marc Savard were among the names left off the list of 46 players invited to the Canadian men's Olympic team summer orientation camp on Thursday.

Executive director Steve Yzerman and his management team wanted to keep the Aug. 24-27 camp in Calgary to a "manageable size," and that meant leaving some talented players off the list.

Spezza, the flashy centre for the Ottawa Senators, had an off-year by his standards of 32 goals and 41 assists, but it was a surprise to the Toronto native not to even be invited.

"It's disappointing," he said. "I'd want to be there and be part of that, but I don't make the decisions.

"I just have to prove to them that I can make the team. I thought I did a pretty good job for them this year at the worlds and I think I can play at that level."

Yzerman said players not invited can still make the team for the 2010 Games in Vancouver... read more at TSN.ca

LaRose re-signs with Hurricanes; inks two-year deal
Jul 02, 2009 - 5:00 PM PDT     Credit:

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes are keeping Chad LaRose with a two-year deal.

The Hurricanes on Thursday said they signed the popular forward to a contract that will pay him US$1.5 million in the upcoming season and US$1.9 million in 2010-11.

The 27-year-old LaRose is coming off a career year with personal bests of 81 games, 19 goals and 31 points. He helped the Hurricanes reach the Eastern Conference finals.

Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford called LaRose, a one-time undrafted free agent, "a key player for our franchise."

He became the third high-profile offensive player to re-sign with Carolina this week. Fellow forwards Erik Cole and Jussi Jokinen, who were also free agents, signed two-year... read more at TSN.ca

SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Florida Panthers made sure they didn't lose Jay Bouwmeester for nothing.

They signed Jordan Leopold to a one-year, $1.75 million contract on Thursday, locking up the player they received from Calgary in exchange for Bouwmeester's rights.

The 28-year-old joins his third NHL tream.

Leopold had seven goals and 24 points in 83 games for Calgary and Colorado last season.

The Panthers acquired him and a third-round pick from the Flames in exchange for Bouwmeester last... read more at TSN.ca

Cullen: The Numbers For Free Agent Frenzy
Jul 02, 2009 - 3:00 PM PDT     Credit:

Before the big free agent festivities, the Canadiens gave up a lot for Scott Gomez and the Flames secured a cornerstone piece for their defence, both covered in Numbers Game articles, as is the case for major moves in which players switch teams.

With NHL free agency underway, here is a brief, by-the-numbers look at more than 40 transactions, with the major moves getting the full Numbers Game treatment.

The first move of free agent day was the Sedins re-signing in Vancouver.  Somewhat surprising that they accepted the five-year term after proposing a 12-year contract, but this was a must for the Canucks -- it's simply not reasonable to expect to replace two point-per-game scorers through free agency.

OHLUNDThe Sedin's teammate in Vancouver, D Mattias Ohlund, has now signed in Tampa Bay; a huge upgrade on the Lightning blueline.

Ohlund signed a seven-year deal for $3.75-million per season, a long deal for a player that will be... read more at TSN.ca

Kings sign Scuderi to four-year, $13.6M contract
Jul 02, 2009 - 2:00 PM PDT     Credit:

The Los Angeles Kings made their first dip into the free agent market on Thursday, signing defenceman Rob Scuderi to a four-year, $13.6 million contract.

Scuderi, 30, tallied 16 points in 81 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season and helped lead the club to a Stanley Cup victory over the Detroit Red Wings last month.

In 300 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, the veteran blueliner has 39 points and 112 penalty minutes.... read more at TSN.ca

Maple Leafs re-sign Grabovski to three-year, $8.7M deal
Jul 02, 2009 - 12:00 PM PDT     Credit:

The Toronto Maple Leafs took care of business with forward Mikhail Grabovki on Thursday, signing the restricted free agent to a three-year contract averaging $2.9 million a season.

Grabovski, 25, is coming off his first full NHL season, scoring 20 goals and 48 points in 78 games. He was acquired in a trade from the Montreal Canadiens last summer in exchange for the rights to defenceman Greg Pateryn and a second-round draft pick in the 2010 draft.

A native of Potsdam, Germany, Grabovski was Montreal's fourth choice, 150th overall, in the 2004 draft.

In 105 career NHL games, he has 23 goals and 57 points.... read more at TSN.ca

Jul 02, 2009 - 12:00 PM PDT     Credit:

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Coyotes added more veteran presence to their blue-line.

They signed defenceman Adrian Aucoin to a US$2.25-million, one-year contract on Thursday.

Aucoin spent the past two years with the Calgary Flames, putting up 10 goals and 34 points in 81 games last year.

It will be the sixth NHL team for Aucoin, who turns 36 on Friday.

The former Vancouver Canuck has scored 108 goals and 336 points in 851 career NHL... read more at TSN.ca

GM Murray says there is no progress in Heatley trade
Jul 02, 2009 - 12:00 PM PDT     Credit:

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators appear to be back at Square 1 in the Dany Heatley saga.

A trade proposed earlier this week that would have seen the disgruntled left-winger dealt to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for three players is off the table, at least for now, Senators GM Bryan Murray said Thursday, after having to pay Heatley a US $4-million signing bonus at midnight Wednesday.

"Well, it's different now and I don't know if we will continue or not," Murray said of the trade with the Oilers that would have sent forwards Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner and defenceman Ladislav Smid to Ottawa. "I will, I believe, during the day talk to (Oilers GM) Steve Tambellini again, but very definitely, it's not the same deal as it was yesterday."

Murray was blunt when asked where that leaves Heatley now.

"Nowhere, he's an Ottawa Senator," he said.

Just prior to the NHL draft last month, Heatley requested... read more at TSN.ca

Report: Nash, Blue Jackets far apart in new contract talks
Jul 02, 2009 - 10:00 AM PDT     Credit:

The Columbus Blue Jackets and captain Rick Nash appear to be further apart in their contract negotiations than either side would have expected.

According to a report in the Columbus Dispatch, the club and winger, who can become a free agent at the end of the 2009-10 season met on Wednesday night and the Blue Jackets' offer fell well short of what Nash and his agent, Joe Resnick, were expecting.

"Things didn't line up the way I anticipated them lining up," Nash told the Dispatch. "I thought we had a solid chance of getting (a contract) done, especially with all the interest they said they had going into this.

"If this doesn't happen in the next week, and we can't hit a number where we're both satisfied and we both feel it's fair … if they want me that bad, they'll get it done."

The Dispatch speculates that the club came forward with a five-year deal, which was unacceptable to the 25-year old... read more at TSN.ca

Interesting Start to the Season
Oct 23, 2008 - 10:51 PM PDT
strangecanuck..com

It's definately been an interesting start to the Canucks season. First off, we got the preseason which showed that a Canucks team in pre-season could actually score some goals. Of course, pre-season means nothing, despite an impressive record of 6-0-1. Of course many in this city were already planning the parade route. I was optimistic, but knew this wasn't going to stick around for too long. After scoring 11 goals in 2 games against division rival Calgary, i must admit i was fairly impressed by the speed and energy. This was a team that looked fast against a very slow Calgary team and were able to score some pretty impressive looking goals off the rush. Real bang bang type plays. But alas, this wasn't going to last. The next 5 games included 4 losses. A couple of them one would easily consider really bad losses where they simply looked terrible. A 5-1 loss to Washington they had no business being in only able to get a embarassing 10 shots on net. Only 3 through 40 minutes. The 5-2... read more at Strange Canuck

If you looked in the HockeyNerds.com blog directory, you would have seen a bit of a brief description on what this blog is all about. Basically i consider myself a pretty strange Canucks fan. I'm usually pretty optimistic and judge the team pretty well on how they're playing. I'm not the typical Canucks fan that is always bashing the team horribly after a single loss and flaming to get all the top players traded away. And of course when the Canucks win a game i'm not about to start planning the Stanley Cup parade route. I'm a die hard fan who watches a lot of hockey, and do so pretty quietly. The most you'll hear out of me while watching a Canucks game is a simple yell of 'Scores!' when the Canucks scores. I don't get too pissed about a loss, and i don't get too happy about a win. I take it all in stride and tend to rate the team on their overall performance on an overall set of games. This is what this blog will be all about. Just my thoughts on each game as it happens as well as... read more at Strange Canuck
